A photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for a model of the S-38 type fast torpedo boat in 1:72 scale. The metal parts replace and supplement plastic elements that an injection mold cannot produce thin enough – on ship models these are typically railings, ladders, gratings, hatches and small fittings. It is exactly these elements that decide whether a model looks convincing. The set is an accessory; the plastic kit is not included in the package.
The Schnellboot was a German fast torpedo boat used during the Second World War in the North Sea, the English Channel and the Mediterranean. The S-38 type was among the most widespread versions. Its hull combined wooden and steel elements, propulsion came from powerful diesel engines and the main armament was bow torpedo tubes supplemented by light cannon. Later boats received an armored conning position, which gave the crew on the bridge protection against gunfire.
Photo-etched railings are fitted only after the deck has been painted, otherwise they are deformed during painting. Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and make longer bends in a bending tool. Metal is bonded with super glue – apply it in a minimal amount with a pin or a piece of wire, so that it does not run onto the deck. Degrease the sheet before painting and cover it with a primer. With ships it pays to think through the order of work in advance: first the hull and the deck, then the superstructures and only at the end the small photo-etch, so that it is not damaged during handling.
The set is an accessory for a kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
