About product

Sturmgeschütz 40 Ausf. G, production 1944, in 1:72 scale - a kit from UM

A plastic kit of the Sturmgeschütz 40 Ausf. G assault gun in the release corresponding to production in 1944, in 1:72 scale. The maker is the Ukrainian brand UM, which has long focused on the small scale and on less usual variants. The year in the designation is not a formality: the Ausf. G was built for a long time, and machines from 1944 differ from the older ones in a whole row of details, which matters when choosing accessories and markings. The contents of the package, the number of parts and the number of marking schemes are given on the packaging.

The real subject

Sturmgeschütz 40 is the later designation of the assault gun built on the chassis of the Panzer III medium tank. The original conception counted on a vehicle for the direct fire support of infantry, carrying the gun in a fixed superstructure with no rotating turret. It was precisely the absence of a turret that made it possible to lower the silhouette and to mount a relatively strong weapon on a comparatively light chassis. The Ausf. G version was the most numerous variant of the whole line and during production it went through a row of partial modifications - the resolution of the gun mantlet, the mounting of the machine gun, the arrangement of the hatches and the external details all changed. The release from 1944 therefore looks different from older pieces of the same version.

Building and painting tips

The small scale forgives less than it seems. Assemble the running gear - the road wheels, the return rollers and the tracks - and let it cure before you attach it to the hull, otherwise the spacing easily goes astray. Fill the seams in the superstructure and sand them down, because in 1:72 they are more visible than the detailed castings. Paint with an airbrush thinly and in several coats; a thick application in this scale floods the engraved detail. Apply a gloss varnish under the decals and matte the finish once they are dry. Keep the weathering restrained: a wash into the recesses, fine dust pigments on the underside of the hull and on the running gear, and create any chipping with a thin brush, not with a sponge.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers of military vehicles in 1:72 scale.
  • Those interested in a specific production release, not just in the general type.
  • Builders who want to put together the development line of one subject.
  • Those who do not mind small parts and careful work on the running gear.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the later official designation of the assault gun built on the chassis of the Panzer III. The Ausf. G version was the most numerous variant of the line.

It refers to a specific production release. The Ausf. G version changed in details during production, so pieces from 1944 look different from older ones.

You will find the number of parts and the contents on the packaging.

Rather not. In 1:72 scale the parts of the running gear are small and they call for patience and thin glue.
