A hexagon head of exactly one millimeter in diameter, with a lower crown. The reference size of the whole grid, from which the neighboring steps are easy to judge.

A round millimeter is the size most modelers start with when they want to get an idea of the scale of the joints. It can be judged by eye, it can be easily compared with a drill bit, and from it the neighboring steps up and down can be worked out. That is why it is worth having at hand even if you finally end up with another diameter.
The head has a lower crown than a full hexagon, but its face is prominent. Once painted, all six edges stay legible on it, so the reflection of light gives the shape away even from a greater distance. On a model it is the size for the joints of the engine, the mounting of footpegs or the screws on the handlebar clamps.
The combined package of larger diameters holds this step among five others. What should decide is the quantity: a round millimeter is used up on one machine faster than the sizes at the edges, and anyone building in series or repairing an older model will appreciate being able to top it up on its own, without buying the whole five again.
A drill bit of the same diameter will serve in this case as a reliable gauge: what passes through a hole made with it will fit here as well. If you want to be sure, make a test hole in an offcut of plastic and seat the head in it dry once, before you start working on the model itself.
