A set of replacement resin wheels from the Czech manufacturer AML in 1:48 scale. It is not an aircraft model but a small accessory with a big effect: finely cast wheels replace the two-piece plastic originals from a Curtiss P-40 kit in the B, C, E, M and N versions. Swapping the wheels is the simplest way to try working with resin accessories, with no cutting into the kit, just cut it off the casting block and fit it.
The Curtiss P-40 served from Pearl Harbor to Burma, North Africa and the Eastern Front, and it was among the most numerous American fighters of the war. Its landing gear retracted rearwards into the wing, so the wheels are clearly visible on a standing aircraft, and that is where simple two-piece plastic parts with a seam through the middle of the tread fall furthest behind. A resin casting offers a crisp tread and fine hub detail in one piece, with no glued joint.
Separate the wheels from the casting block with a razor saw and sand the mark down where it will be hidden by the contact with the ground. Paint the tire dark gray rather than pure black, which looks more natural, and fill in the hub with a brush around the edge of a template mask or a circle-cut mask. A light dusting with pigments ties the wheels in with the rest of the landing gear.
