A masking set from the manufacturer Peewit in 1:72 scale for a model of the carrier fighter Supermarine Seafang in the F Mk.31 version. The sheet holds pre-shaped self-adhesive masks which are stuck directly onto the parts of a model and replace the cutting of masking tape to the outline of the frames. In 1:72 scale the canopy is small and the precision of the outline plays a greater role there than anywhere else. The set is an accessory for a kit: the model, paints and glue are not in the package.
The Seafang was a carrier fighter derived from the Supermarine Spiteful, that is, from the postwar development branch following on from the Spitfire, but with a new wing of laminar profile. It was powered by a Rolls-Royce Griffon piston engine. The F Mk.31 version represented the simpler form following on from the standard wing, whereas the later variant was given further alterations for carrier operation. The type never entered wider operational service, as the arrival of jet carrier fighters stopped its production, and that is why only a small number of machines arose. It is precisely that which makes it of interest to a modeler.
Wash and degrease the clear part. Take the masks off the sheet with the tip of a scalpel, seat them and press the edges down thoroughly with a toothpick, as in a small scale the slightest unstuck edge is enough for the paint to run under. Complete the remaining surfaces with tape or liquid mask. Spray in thin layers, first the shade of the interior of the frames and, once dry, the exterior color. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has set, pulling at a sharp angle, ideally lifted with the tip of a scalpel without touching the glazing.
