Pontos Model U-Boot Type IX C - photo-etched detail set 1:72 is an upgrade set for a model of the German ocean-going submarine. It is not a model of the submarine but an accessory for a kit already bought.

A photo-etched detail set from the Pontos Model brand in 1:72 scale for a large model of the Type IX C submarine. Sets of this kind replace features that cannot be molded from plastic finely enough - gratings, railings, the platforms of the conning tower, footholds and other structures on which every millimeter shows in this scale. It is not a model of the submarine but an accessory for a plastic kit.
The Type IX C was among the German ocean-going submarines with a long range. Against the more widespread Type VII it was larger, had a bulkier hull and carried more fuel and torpedoes, so it suited long voyages far from home bases. The armament consisted of torpedo tubes at the bow and at the stern, and in the early period of the war a gun was mounted on the deck. Diesel engines provided the power on the surface and electric motors with batteries underwater. It was precisely the long range that destined these boats for operations in distant areas of the ocean.
Separate the photo-etched parts with a scalpel on a hard support and make the folds with a bending tool, so that the lines stay straight. Use super glue in a small amount for gluing; on large areas two-part epoxy, which gives time to line things up, also proves itself. Always give the metal a primer before painting. On a model in 1:72 scale it pays to proceed in sections and to paint the parts of the conning tower separately while they are accessible. Then unify the hull in one shade and lead the transition between the dark upper and lighter lower parts softly. At the end, fine rust traces under the drain openings and a matte varnish will help.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
