An add-on set of ski landing gear for a model of the Soviet Yakovlev Yak-1 fighter in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit of the aircraft, as the model is obtained separately. The set replaces the wheeled landing gear from the kit and makes it possible to build the aircraft in its winter form, a variant that ordinary kits do not have in the box. It is based on the dimensions of the Zvezda kit.
Why skis of all things
Winter operation from unpaved, snow-covered surfaces meant a fundamental problem for wheeled landing gear, as a wheel sinks in and the takeoff run is unreliable. The solution was landing gear with skis. The set therefore opens up quite a different build from the standard summer machine: a combination with a winter camouflage finish and with a snow-covered diorama surface suggests itself, where the ski landing gear explains the whole scene at once.
The Yakovlev Yak-1 was a single-engine Soviet fighter of mixed construction, a welded tube frame fuselage completed with wood and fabric, with a liquid-cooled V12 engine. The design was deliberately simple so that it could be produced in large numbers even in makeshift conditions and serviced at field airfields. Ski landing gear was used on Soviet fighters of that time in the winter season precisely because of operation from unpaved, snow-covered surfaces.
First wash the small resin and printed parts in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let them dry, as residues of mold release agent or resin are the most frequent reason why paint does not hold. Remove the supports with a sharp scalpel or a very fine saw, not by snipping them dry, as the material is more brittle than plastic. They are bonded with super glue; cement for plastic has no effect. Before fitting them, test dry how the skis sit, because on a winter build the aircraft has to stand level with the skis parallel, or it is obvious at once on the finished model. They are painted over a primer; apply the snow and the winter weathering right at the end.
This is an add-on set, not a model. The base Zvezda kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
