A large-scale plastic kit of the McLaren MP4/2C — Prost / Rosberg in 1:12 scale from Italeri. The Formula 1 turbo-era car of 1986 with etched parts, rubber tires and decals for both drivers on the team.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of a Formula 1 car in the huge 1:12 scale — the finished model measures around 37 cm. The set is listed as advanced (the manufacturer's highest level of difficulty) and holds a thoroughly rendered engine, well worked suspension, rubber tires and etched parts (among them the TAG Turbo lettering on the valve covers and the buckles of the seat belts). The body panels are removable, so the engine bay and the monocoque can be displayed open once the build is done. Two decal sheets are enclosed: one for the exterior, the cockpit and the engine, the other with imitations of composite (carbon) materials. The decals cover both versions of the 1986 season — car number 1 of Alain Prost and car number 2 of Keke Rosberg.
The MP4/2C is a car from the peak of the Formula 1 turbo era. The engines of the 1980s were brutal: the turbocharged TAG-Porsche V6 gave around 850 horsepower in race trim and in short qualifying bursts it went past a thousand. The cars were immensely fast and dangerous. Alain Prost defended his world championship title with the MP4/2C in 1986 — it was decided only by the final race in Adelaide. His teammate was Keke Rosberg, world champion of 1982 and father of Nico Rosberg; the 1986 season was his last in F1.
A Formula 1 model is a different discipline from a tank. The body has to be perfectly smooth and highly glossy — gloss paint is sprayed and then polished, and absolutely every mistake comes out in the gloss. On a military model imperfections disappear under the weathering; here nothing hides. Count on careful filling and sanding of the seams, primer and several thin coats of paint. The extensive sponsor markings are the main work — large decals have to seat on curved sides and body panels without a single bubble, so a decal softener is practically a necessity. Once the decals are dry it is recommended to spray a clear coat over them and polish the surface — that hides the edges of the decals and gives the model the wet gloss of a real Formula 1 car. Apply the carbon decals in small pieces and along the direction of the pattern. Glue the etched parts with cyanoacrylate. The engine, the turbos and the suspension, by contrast, take metallic shades and fine toning well — on an exposed engine the detail shows.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
