Airbrush stencils make it possible to spray a regular structure onto a surface without having to draw it with a brush. This set carries a wood texture motif, that is, the pattern of rings and grain that is missing on smooth plastic. It comes into its own anywhere the surface is to resemble wood: crates and pallets in a diorama, beds, floors, wall cladding and parts of furniture.
The stencil has a format of 90 by 60 millimeters and is intended for 1:32 and 1:35 scales. The density of the pattern depends on the scale: a structure that looks natural in a larger scale merges into a uniform area in a smaller one. It is an aid for making dioramas, where wooden surfaces appear most often.
First spray the base shade of the wood and let it dry. Then lay the stencil down, hold it close against the surface so that no overspray gets underneath, and go over it with a darker shade in a thin coat. Hold the airbrush perpendicular to the surface and spray rather less than more; a fine structure is easily painted over and merges away. Wipe the stencil after every use while the paint is still wet, because dried paint clogs the pattern and the next impression comes out faint. On rounded surfaces work in smaller sections, so that the stencil settles everywhere.
