A helper ruler is a simple but often underrated aid. It is laid on the part and the scriber or the tip of the knife is drawn closely along its edge, so the line runs straight even where the hand alone would not keep it so. Without a template the scriber only holds its track once the line is deep enough, and it is exactly the first two strokes in which most stray grooves are made. The original name is a machine translation; this is a helper ruler for modeling work.
The ruler has to lie flat over its whole area, otherwise the tip slips under the edge and the line splits in two. On rounded parts, where a full contact cannot be ensured, a flexible guide tape is safer. While working, press on the scriber only lightly; sideways pressure will shift even a well held ruler. Once finished it is worth checking the line under sharp light or under a thin coat of primer, where an unevenness shows up sooner than on bare plastic.
