The coarsest of the three grades stops being a background and becomes an element of a scene in its own right. The individual grains are large enough for the viewer to study them, so the dark brown tone stands out on them even with the uneven coloring that loose materials naturally have. In the larger scales coarse stone takes on the role that ordinary ballast plays in the small ones.
Coarse grains are spread differently: they cannot be leveled with a brush, because they roll about. It is better to apply them with a brush in parts, press them into binder that is still damp and only then to wet the area and soak it. With stream beds it pays off to place the largest pieces singly with tweezers, so that they form obstacles in the water around which the surface is shaped later.
In color the coarse grade goes well with the medium and the fine one of the same shade, so a bank can be put together from them with the right sorting, from large stones at the water to a fine deposit higher up. The bag holds 353 cm³ of material.
With large grains it holds that there should be fewer of them on an area than seems necessary. Coarse stone is pronounced in itself and in a continuous layer it unifies a surface into uniform grit; placed in clusters, on the other hand, it creates the impression that the water did not carry it anywhere else.
