Rock foil is the quickest way to get rock into a scene. The surface carries the relief of a granite massif with sharp breaks and crevices, that is a structure which is slow to model by hand and hard to repeat over a large area. One piece measures 70 x 24 cm, which is roughly 1680 square centimeters of area, enough for the wall of a cutting, for a slope below a line and for several smaller outcrops.
The foil can be cut with scissors and formed over a surface, so it suits irregular shapes. First create the rough shape of the rock from a backing material, lay the foil onto it dry and cut it with a small overlap. Only then glue it, with a glue suited to your surface, having tried how it behaves on an offcut first. Run the joints along a break in the terrain or hide them with rubble and growth, because a straight line in rock gives the transition away at first glance.
The relief comes out when you apply a dark wash into the hollows and go over the raised edges with a dry brush and a paler shade. Rock rarely looks one color, so leave room for a hint of green at the foot and for a paler crest. Before you reach for a brush, look at a photograph of real rock: granite in the shade of a crevice tends to be markedly cooler than on sunlit edges.
The package holds one piece of foil measuring 70 x 24 cm. The glue, the paints, backing material and other accessories for a scene are not included, unless stated otherwise.
