The 0.2 mm spray assembly as a whole

The package brings together the parts that together decide the quality of the spray pattern: the needle, the nozzle and the nozzle cap. The 0.2 mm diameter is the finest that Vallejo supplies for its airbrushes, and it is intended for detail work from a short distance: shading panels, transitions on figures, fine effects on small areas. The manufacturer states the set only for the Innovator and Profinish models.

When to reach for a replacement

• The spray pattern splits in two or veers to one side
• The paint spatters and forms droplets even after cleaning
• The tip of the needle is bent after the airbrush has been dropped
• There are visible nicks on the mouth of the nozzle

Working with the finest diameter

A 0.2 mm nozzle forgives less than wider diameters. The paint has to be thinned down further, the pressure kept lower, and the cup emptied and flushed when you finish, because dried residue comes out of such a narrow channel only with difficulty. Always withdraw the needle backwards, never forwards through the nozzle. When refitting, tighten the nozzle gently; overtightening is the most common cause of it cracking.

Who it is worth it for

The set belongs in the kit of anyone who uses an airbrush regularly and does not want to put unfinished work aside because of a worn mouth. Replacing all three at once makes sense because the parts seat against one another and wear on one usually leaves its mark on the other two as well. Keeping a spare in reserve makes sense in the same way as with scalpel blades: it saves you the wait at the moment you need it.
