A rich yellow from the Gunze Mr. Color range, tuned for figures and character kits, in a ten milliliter bottle.

Shades intended for character models have a different job from the paints of military vehicles. They are not there to copy the faded finish of a real machine faithfully but to look clean and rich even under display-case lighting. This yellow therefore leans toward a bold, slightly warm color, the kind worn by helmets, robot fittings and parts of clothing on models based on animated subjects.
Yellow and red pigments generally have weaker covering power than grays and greens, and that holds here too. It therefore pays to spray over a light base - white or a very light gray - and to lay the paint down in two or three thin passes instead of one heavy one. A heavy coat both hides detail and lightens unevenly, and the result then looks blotchy.
The Mr. Color range is a lacquer and is thinned with the solvent-based thinner of the same brand. The reward is a hard surface that is not easily scratched in handling and a short drying time. Because of the fumes, ventilation is essential.
The painted surface of a figure looks better once a thin gloss varnish has been laid over it after drying. It evens out the sheen and prepares the base for decal markings, which on figures tend to be small and sensitive to texture.
Under a tone this rich, nothing disappears either. Every unsanded groove or greasy fingerprint shows up as a patch of a different lightness, so the surface of the part belongs prepared before the first pass with the airbrush. Sanding with fine paper and a wipe with alcohol is enough.
