A glue-together plastic kit of the American guided missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay, hull number CG-53, in the exceptionally large 1:200 scale. The 1:200 scale allows the superstructures, radars and deck equipment to be worked out in a level of detail that is out of reach in more common ship scales, but it also makes demands on display space. In its ship range, I Love Kit concentrates on exactly these large scales.
USS Mobile Bay belongs to the Ticonderoga class, that is to the guided missile cruisers of the US Navy built on a hull derived from the Spruance class destroyers. The core of the ship is the Aegis combat system with fixed planar radar arrays on the superstructure, which replaced the classic rotating antenna and can track a large number of targets at once. Mobile Bay belongs to the part of the class that received vertical launch cells below deck instead of the older missile launchers, which fundamentally broadened both the mix and the number of missiles carried. The ship entered service in the second half of the 1980s and served in the formations protecting carrier groups.
A long hull in this scale needs to be built on a flat surface so that it does not bow along its length, and the joints of the hull halves need thorough filling and sanding. Paint the superstructures separately before you seat them, because once they are glued the corners are hard to reach. Do the decks and the waterline with masking rather than a brush; the edges will then be sharp.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
