A set of three figures in 1:32: a driver and further members of air force ground personnel in modern gear. The figures are shaped to the MHU-83 D/E munitions lift truck with the lifting platform lowered into the lower loading position and complete the set with the manufacturer's part number RSK32-0010.

The real subject

The MHU-83 D/E is a low wheeled truck with which ground personnel bring bombs and rockets to an aircraft and lift them into the racks. Work with it is always a team affair: one person operates the truck while others guide the load and watch that the mounting seats exactly. Figures alongside this kind of equipment therefore do more for a scene than any other accessory: the truck on its own stays a machine, but with a crew it turns into a scene a viewer understands at once. The 1:32 scale also lets expressions and gear stand out.

Building and painting

• The figures are shaped into particular positions around one truck, so count on them as an arrangement rather than as freely movable figures.
• The parts are not made of polystyrene and are joined with cyanoacrylate glue; polystyrene cement has no effect on them.
• Wash the figures in water with a little detergent before painting and let them dry, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface.
• Cut excess material and traces of manufacture away with a sharp blade a little from the part and sand the surface down.
• Paint from the base through the main tones to highlighting the edges, and leave faces and hands for last, because the whole figure is judged on them.
• Try the figures dry in position by the truck before gluing, so that arms and legs line up with the real points of contact.
