A resin replacement wheel set for a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II kit in 1:32 scale. It is not a model of the aircraft, but a detail accessory for one: resin castings have a crisper tread pattern, a more legible hub shape and better rendered hub detail than injection-molded plastic can give. The set is listed for the naval F-4J and F-4S versions, whose wheels differ from the older and the land-based Phantom variants, which is why the maker offers it as a separate item alongside the sets for the other groups of versions.
The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a two-seat twin-engine jet that from the end of the 1950s was built in many versions for the US Navy, the Marine Corps and the US Air Force and for a number of foreign operators. The F-4J is the carrier version of the Navy and the Marine Corps with a reworked radar and control system, and the F-4S is its later upgrade with a strengthened airframe and changes to the wing. The undercarriage is a tricycle one with a nosewheel, and the main wheels are sized for hard touchdowns on a carrier deck, which shows in their shape and sturdiness too.
Resin calls for a different procedure than plastic. First wash the castings in lukewarm water with detergent, so that no release agent from the mold is left on them, otherwise the paint will not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a fine cutter and never snap them off. True the cuts up with fine abrasive paper, ideally wet and with respiratory protection. They are glued with cyanoacrylate; ordinary cement for plastic will not join resin. Apply a primer before painting. Set the tire off from the hub with the shade — dark gray with a hint of brown looks truer than pure black — and bring out the tread pattern and the lettering on the sidewalls with a light dark wash.
This is an add-on set, not a model of the aircraft. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
