An injection-molded plastic kit of the German 88 mm Flak 18 gun in 1:35 scale from AFV Club. It is a well worked-out model with a separately assembled carriage and barrel; according to the manufacturer it offers working brass equilibrators for the elevation of the barrel, rubber tires for the transport bogies and fine photo-etched and brass details. The exact contents of the particular box are given in the instructions inside.
The 8.8 cm Flak 18 was a German anti-aircraft gun of 88 mm caliber, the first of the famous family of eighty-eights. It entered service at the end of the 1920s and the beginning of the 1930s. Although it was developed against aircraft, it soon proved to be an exceptionally effective anti-tank weapon: its high muzzle velocity could pierce the armor of the tanks of the day at long range. For firing, the gun was set on a cruciform carriage; for transport it was slung between a pair of wheeled bogies. The German army used the Flak 18 on every front and it became one of the best-known weapons of the war.
A gun builds more slowly than one might think, so it pays to line the carriage, the shield and the elevating mechanism up cleanly. Decide whether you want the gun in the firing position on its cruciform carriage or in the travel position on its bogies. Bring the metal parts of the barrel and the breech to life with a dry brush and a steel pigment. Complete the base gray or dark yellow finish with shading, dark washes in the gaps and dust pigments on the carriage and the wheels.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
