The Sidewinder is an American short-range air-to-air missile with infrared guidance whose family has been developed since the 1950s. The AIM-9L version marked a fundamental turning point: it was the first of the line able to lock onto a target from any direction, that is head-on as well, whereas the earlier forms needed to see the hot exhaust from behind. A more sensitive detector and a more effective fuze came with it. It was exactly this capability that changed the tactics of air combat at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s and made the missile standard armament across the western air forces.
The fins and stabilizers are small and easily lost, so work over a tray with a raised rim. Test the mating surfaces dry first and only then join them, because a correction after the glue has set is difficult on thin profiles. Apply the primer in a thin coat so the engraving is not lost. Training and live rounds differed in the colored bands around the body; before you reach for the paint, settle which state and which period you want to capture.
The set complements another model. Paints, glue and a launcher for the missile are not in the package.
