About product

Reskit CH-54A Tarhe — landing gear without load with weighted wheels, 1:35 (for the ICM kit)

A resin, 3D-printed detail set from Reskit in 1:35 scale. It replaces the landing gear of the plastic CH-54A Tarhe kit from ICM and is worked for a machine standing without a slung load. The set combines metal struts with 3D-printed resin parts and so-called weighted wheels. Please note that this is not a kit of the helicopter — it is an accessory, and the ICM model itself has to be owned separately.

What weighted wheels are and why the manufacturer makes several versions

A wheel out of a mold is perfectly round. A real tire, however, sags and flattens at the bottom under the weight of the machine — a model on round wheels then looks as if the helicopter were levitating above the surface. Weighted wheels imitate this sag. What matters is that the amount of sag depends on the weight of the machine: an empty Tarhe stands on its wheels differently from a Tarhe with a load under its belly. Reskit therefore offers several versions according to the load, and this one is meant for a machine without a load. If you are preparing a model with a slung load, the version for a medium load belongs with it (the manufacturer mentions the M-121 bomb with that one); a variant for a heavy load and a version in flight are available as well. Choose according to what your model is going to carry — with the wrong version the wheels will be sagging illogically.

The real subject

The CH-54A Tarhe, nicknamed the Skycrane, is an American heavy crane helicopter. It has no conventional cargo fuselage: its exposed skeletal frame with no hold exists precisely so that a load or a detachable cabin can be slung underneath. In Vietnam it proved itself among other things in recovering shot-down machines and in carrying oversized loads.

Building and painting tips

Resin does not react to cement for polystyrene — the joint would not hold. It is bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate) or epoxy. Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water so that the remains of print resin and mold release agent disappear; otherwise the paint takes badly. The marks left by the supports are sanded strictly wet — resin dust is harmful to health and must not be inhaled.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the CH-54A Tarhe kit from ICM who want the model without a slung load
  • Modelers who are bothered by the levitating look of the perfectly round wheels from the kit
  • Anyone interested in the combination of solid metal struts and fine 3D printing
  • Builders of dioramas where the model stands on the ground and the wheels are on show

A detail set, not a model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted, without the base kit. Glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a detail set — a replacement landing gear. The base plastic CH-54A Tarhe kit from ICM has to be owned separately.

They differ in the amount of sag of the wheels and the landing gear. This version matches a machine without a slung load. If your model is going to have a load slung under it, choose the version for a medium load, where the manufacturer also mentions the M-121 bomb. A variant for a heavy load and a version in flight exist as well.

Super glue (cyanoacrylate) or epoxy. Ordinary cement for polystyrene has no effect on resin.

Yes, wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water because of the remains of print resin and mold release agent. Sand wet — resin dust must not be inhaled.
