The Engine Air Particle Separator (EAPS) for the CH-54A Tarhe is a resin 3D-printed set of filter housings for the ICM kit in 1:35 scale. It is not a helicopter kit but an accessory that markedly changes the silhouette of the engine deck.
Responsibility details are not available.
A detail set from Reskit for the ICM kit. It is not a helicopter kit - you have to own the base CH-54A model in 1:35 separately. The abbreviation EAPS stands for Engine Air Particle Separator, that is a separator for particles at the engine intake. On the model it means two prominent angular housings with a fine mesh that sit above the engines - and they visibly change the silhouette of the machine.
A turbine engine draws air in with enormous force. When a helicopter takes off or lands on a dusty, sandy or snow-covered surface, it whips up a dense cloud beneath it - the pilot loses his view and the engine swallows sand and dust along with the air. The hard particles then work like a sandblasting nozzle: they wear away the compressor and turbine blades and can ruin an engine within a few dozen hours of use. The EAPS is a separator placed ahead of the engine - the air changes direction inside it, the heavier particles are separated by inertia and led away, while the air reaching the engine is considerably cleaner. In dusty and desert service this was essential protection for an expensive power plant.
According to the manufacturer's instructions the set holds two large filter blocks with a fine perforated mesh, their front frames, small intake throats, aerodynamic fairings and struts with which the whole assembly is braced to the fuselage. A sheet of decals with technical lettering is included as well. The instructions explicitly allow for the EAPS to be fitted either onto the engines from the ICM kit or onto the separately sold engine set from the same manufacturer.
Not every machine had the EAPS. It was optional equipment tied to service in dusty conditions, not standard equipment on all examples. The particular units and periods in which the EAPS was used on the CH-54A are not reliably documented, and are therefore not stated here. Before you use the set, compare it with period photographs of exactly the machine and the fuselage number you are building. Fitting the EAPS to a machine that did not actually carry it is a mistake a knowledgeable viewer notices at once.
Resin parts cannot be glued with cement for polystyrene - cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) is needed, or epoxy on large surfaces. Cut the print supports away with a saw. Sand wet and do not breathe the resin dust - it is harmful to health. Before painting, wash the parts in water with detergent and remove the mold release agent. The fine mesh of the filter is the most rewarding place in the whole set: spray it with a dark base and go over it lightly with a dry brush so that the texture stands out.
The detail set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
