A set of figures of Red Army soldiers in winter gear in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. It is not a vehicle kit but a group of figures for a scene. They suit tanks, self-propelled guns and trucks in the same scale, or they can serve as a stand-alone exercise in figure painting.
The winter gear of the Red Army is among the most recognizable there is. A padded jacket and trousers, a fur cap with flaps over the ears and felt valenki boots kept the wearer warmer in hard frost than most of what the opponent had available. A long greatcoat, a belt with ammunition pouches and a submachine gun went with them. Snow and frost also change the way a soldier moves: figures in such gear tend to be more hunched and visually wider, which shows on the figures and adds credibility to the scene.
Padded clothing is painted differently from broadcloth. The folds are soft and rounded, so instead of sharp lines a smooth transition and a slight lightening of the tops of the quilting will help. Keep the khaki faded, because period cloth lost its intensity after a few weeks in the field. Leave the valenki in a light gray-beige tone and dirty the lower part with pigment. Add snow sparingly, only on the shoulders, the cap and the boots; a figure whitened all over looks buried rather than snow-covered.
