An anti-tank obstacle in 1:35 scale from the Vallejo range of diorama accessories. The name denotes the shape of a trident; the dimensions of the parts are stated on the packaging. The package contains no terrain, no hardware and no figures; it is a stand-alone prop for completing a scene.
Barriers of this kind were built in places vehicles had to pass through: at exits, by bridges, on beaches and at the mouths of streets. For a diorama builder they have two merits. First, they state clearly that the scene takes place on a defensive line, without your having to add a single soldier. Second, they help to close the composition, because set at an angle near the edge of the base they naturally stop the viewer's gaze and direct it back inside the scene.
The procedure differs according to the surface you want to give the subject. Paint a steel variant with a dark base, then draw the edges out with a dry brush in a metallic shade and add surface corrosion; on barriers standing in water or in mud the rust reaches high up. A concrete look, by contrast, rests on a gray base, a wash into the gaps and a dry brush in an almost white color. In both cases sink the foot into the terrain and leave a deposit of soil, sand or rubble around it. An obstacle should definitely not stand cleanly on a surface; it never looked like that. Small bends and dents added before painting help the credibility, if the material of the casting allows it.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a base. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
