This is not a ship model but a metal detail accessory for a model of the Italian heavy cruiser in 1:350 scale. The package contains eight turned barrels of 203 mm caliber for the main artillery and twelve barrels of 100 mm caliber for the dual-purpose battery. The molded plastic barrels are cut off and replaced with metal ones.
The main difference is the bore. A turned barrel has its muzzle genuinely drilled, so it does not have to be laboriously drilled out in plastic with a micro drill, where the bit likes to wander and split the part. Metal holds perfect alignment and straightness even on longer barrels, which in plastic often twist as they shrink. On multi-gun turrets it also keeps the same spacing and the same projection of all the barrels, which is immediately visible on a finished model. A metal barrel also takes handling during the rest of the build and does not snap at the first touch.
Cut the plastic barrel off as close to the face of the turret as possible and widen the hole with a drill so that the shank of the metal part slips in without force. Glue with gel grade cyanoacrylate or with two-part epoxy, which gives time to align it. Before painting, degrease the metal with alcohol and apply a primer made for metal, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface. Instead of paint, the metal can be treated with chemical oxidation or a blackening solution, which gives the muzzle a natural dark tone without losing the sharp edges. When cleaning the finished model, do not press on the barrels, as they can be bent.
The set is an accessory to a model, not a standalone kit. The ship model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
