A set of photo-etched grilles for the air intakes of models of the Su-27, Su-27UB and Su-30SM airplanes in 1:48 scale. It is a part that practically cannot be made in plastic: a real grille is formed of thin louvers with large openings, whereas injection-molded plastic replaces them with a thick imitation or with engraving only. Photo-etched sheet gives the intakes the depth and the see-through that are immediately visible on a model with open intakes.
The Su-27 is a twin-engined fighter with an integral aerodynamic layout, a pair of vertical tail surfaces and air intakes placed under the wing center section. It is exactly there that machines of this family carry protective elements against ingesting foreign objects during operation on the ground. The Su-27UB is the two-seat version with a tandem cockpit, and the Su-30SM belongs to the later two-seat multirole machines derived from the same design family.
Photo-etched sheet is thin and malleable, so it is worked differently from plastic. Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and then level the remains of the tabs with a fine file or a sanding sponge, because a tab that has not been cleaned up shows once varnish is on. Make the bends along the pressed grooves, ideally in a photo-etch bending tool or between two blades, so that the edge is straight and sharp. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) in a minimal amount; with larger areas the gel version helps, because it leaves a few seconds for positioning the part. Degrease the sheet and spray it with a primer before painting, otherwise the paint holds badly on the smooth metal.
This is an add-on set for a plastic model, not a standalone kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
