CF-188A is the Canadian designation of the single-seat version of the Hornet, that is, the twin-engine combat aircraft with turbofan engines that serves for the defense of airspace as well as for attacks on ground targets. Canadian machines have several recognition marks that modelers notice: a powerful spotlight on the left side of the forward fuselage, which served for night identification of an aircraft being shadowed, and a false canopy painted on the underside of the fuselage, meant to confuse an opponent at a distance about which way the aircraft is heading.
The Royal Canadian Air Force prepares one machine each season for air displays and gives it a special color scheme. The name of this item relates to the anniversary scheme for the centenary of the Royal Canadian Air Force, which fell in 2024. Demonstration machines are popular among modelers precisely because their finish departs completely from the ordinary gray of line aircraft.
With a strikingly finished machine it pays to prepare the surface more carefully than usual: sand the joints, restore the panel lines after sanding and spray the whole model with a uniform primer so no blotches appear under the paint. Lay the colors on from light to dark and mask the boundaries with tape applied before spraying, not once the paint has dried. Before applying the decals, go over the surface with gloss varnish so no silvery veil forms under them, and once they are dry lock them in with matte or semi-gloss varnish to match the real aircraft.
