A set of three modern door machine guns of Belgian origin with their feeders, cast in resin. The faster successor of the older pattern is told by its shorter barrel with a quick-change mounting.

When a replacement was sought for the proven but aging door machine gun of the large Marine Corps helicopters, the choice fell on a Belgian design derived from the aircraft version of the same weapon. The new mount was designated GAU-21/A and brought above all a higher rate of fire: roughly 1000 rounds per minute against the 700 to 800 of its predecessor means that the gunner can cover the target during a shorter pass. No less important was the barrel, which can be changed without setting the headspace, so the crew can work on the weapon even in the shaking space of the cabin.
The difference between the two generations is clearly visible on a model in 1:48 scale. The newer weapon has a differently arranged barrel jacket, a different stock and a different mounting for the ammunition box, so mixing the patterns up moves the machine a whole modernization wave in time. Anyone building the helicopter in its form of the last two decades reaches for this variant; the older pattern belongs to the machines of the 1990s and earlier.
The castings hold their shape even in thin places, because resin, unlike plastic, does not have to be poured into an opening mold. The accessory aims at models of large naval helicopters in 1:48 and, with a little work, suits other carriers of the same weapon as well.
