The Republic F-105 Thunderchief is an American supersonic fighter-bomber that became the main strike type of the US Air Force in the first half of the Vietnam War. The single-seat F-105D version flew strikes against ground targets, while the two-seat F-105G specialized in the suppression of enemy air defenses. The nose of the aircraft is slender and ends in a long pitot tube, so its shape strongly determines the overall impression a model makes.
The set replaces the nose cone including the pitot tube. It offers a more accurate shape for the nose and a thin tube, which on a molded plastic part tends to be thick and irregular. It can be used on both forms, the F-105D as well as the F-105G.
The parts are not polystyrene; they are joined with super glue, and it is a good idea to wash and degrease them before painting. Cut the original nose off squarely, level the surface on abrasive paper laid on a firm base and check the continuity of the fuselage outline dry. The new tube is slender, so glue it in only after the clear coat is finished, so that it does not get in the way during sanding and spraying. The nose is often a different color from the rest of the fuselage, so it is a good idea to mask the edge of the transition.
The set suits modelers who want to remove the most common weak point of large models, that is an inaccurate and thickened nose. The change is small in extent but clearly visible in the resulting silhouette of the model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
