This accessory by the Polish brand MASTER replaces the plastic air data tube on the nose of a model of the MiG-23 fighter with variable-geometry wings. According to its name the part is cut for all versions except the MLD variant, for which MASTER makes a separate item. It is worth checking that distinction before buying, because the tube differs between the two groups of versions.
The air data tube of the MiG-23 is long, slender and stepped, exactly the kind of shape injected plastic cannot handle. A plastic part tends to have a parting line along its whole length, it is often slightly bent, and the individual steps of diameter are softened. Turned metal holds the sharp transitions of diameter, it is perfectly straight and concentric and it has a real opening in the front. There is a practical, mechanical advantage as well: a metal tube survives being touched while the model is handled, whereas a plastic one breaks in this place again and again.
Cut the plastic original off as close to the fuselage as possible and level the surface with a file. Drill the hole with a micro drill bit, increase the diameter in small steps and keep trying the fit. Glue with cyanoacrylate or epoxy; ordinary cement for plastic does not work here. Check the axis from two directions, from above and from the front. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and use a primer for metal surfaces, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface and will rub off at the first touch. An alternative is to leave the metal in its natural shade and simply darken it by blackening. Glue the tube in only once painting and decals are finished.
