Big Ed is a bundle of several separate accessory sets that Eduard issues for one type of aircraft and sells together in a single box instead of item by item. This package is intended for a model of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XII fighter in 1:48 scale. It is not an aircraft kit but a set of accessories that are fitted into a model you have to obtain separately.
For the more widespread types Eduard usually offers several separate products: a full photo-etched set for the interior and the exterior, a smaller pre-painted cockpit set, self-adhesive masks for the glazing and the wheels, and other small sets. Big Ed puts them into one parcel, so you do not have to build an order out of individual items and you have what matters for the model together right away. The exact make-up of a particular bundle differs between issues; please check the contents on the box.
The Spitfire Mk.XII was the first version of the Spitfire put into series production with the Rolls-Royce Griffon engine. It differed from the Merlin versions in a longer forward fuselage with pronounced blisters over the cylinder banks, in the opposite direction of propeller rotation and in shortened, so-called clipped wing tips. The clipped wing and the powerful engine gave the aircraft outstanding performance at low level, so it was used against low-flying targets. It was built in limited numbers only and served with a handful of squadrons.
Photo-etched parts call for sharp scissors or a scalpel and a support; make the bends in a bending tool or between two blades. Do not overspray the pre-painted parts, or you will lose the instrument artwork; only knock them back with clear flat varnish. Glue them with super glue or with thicker varnish, never with cement for plastic. Apply the masks to perfectly clean glazing and take them off after spraying while the paint is still fresh, so that the edge does not tear.
The bundle is an add-on to a plastic kit, not a stand-alone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
