Machines from American production lines under British roundels: an Xtradecal 1:48 decal sheet, part one. Markings for models from the war years.
Responsibility details are not available.
American aircraft in the service of the Fleet Air Arm are the theme of this 1:48 decal sheet from the British firm Xtradecal. It is the first part of a series devoted to machines of American manufacture that flew under British roundels during the Second World War. The sheet is intended for kits that the modeler obtains separately.
The Fleet Air Arm went into the war with hopelessly obsolete carrier aircraft, and the gap could only be filled by deliveries from the United States. The British took over lent and purchased machines by the hundred, repainted them into naval camouflage and even gave many of them their own British names. They flew from escort and strike carriers, from shore bases and over the Atlantic, where they protected convoys from submarines.
The markings bed down best on a smooth gloss base, so coat the area under the decal with gloss varnish first. Cut the design out as tight as possible, soak it in lukewarm water and slide it into place. Decal softeners help on engraving and rivets, and once dry a matte or satin overcoat unifies the whole model.
