What the stencils are for

A stencil is a thin sheet with shapes cut through it. It is laid on the surface and paint is applied through it, so the shape comes out precisely and can be repeated as many times as needed without having to be painted by hand each time. Modelers use them for surface textures, for breaking up large areas and for elements that recur regularly on a model or on the base of a diorama. The work is quick and the result looks even, even where a brush would give itself away.

Dimensions and format

The set contains three medium-size stencils measuring 90 x 60 mm. The format is chosen so that it can be used on the surface of a model and on a base, while still fitting in one hand. The smaller size also has the advantage that it can be laid on a curved surface, where a large sheet would not sit flat. The three pieces in one package can be alternated, combined and overlaid during work.

Usage tips

Lay the stencil down and hold it as close to the surface as possible, otherwise the paint will creep under the edge and the shape will blur. Spray perpendicular to the surface, from a short distance and in several light passes, because one heavy pass always runs. Take the stencil off while the paint is still fresh and clean it right away so that paint does not dry on it. Choose the thinner according to the paint used and follow the paint manufacturer's instructions on the packaging. Before you let the stencil near the model, try the airbrush setting out on a piece of cardboard; it saves repairs on a finished surface.
