About product

Metal barrels QF 4.5 inch Mk.I 1:700 — Flyhawk

A set of turned metal barrels for the British naval gun QF 4.5 inch Mk.I in 1:700 scale from the Flyhawk brand. It is not a model of a ship or a kit — it is a replacement part with which the plastic barrels in an already part-built model are exchanged for exactly turned metal ones. In 1:700 scale a barrel measures only a few millimeters, and the plastic treatment tends to be thickened because of the possibilities of molding, imperfectly round or carrying a parting line along its whole length. A metal barrel removes these troubles and at the same time does not deform while being handled.

What the set is for

The British guns of 4.5 inch caliber Mk.I were the universal naval armament of the Royal Navy used in turret and mounted installations. That is exactly why replacement barrels of this type suit more than one class of vessel — but check the particular model the set fits against the armament of your own ship. The visual gain in a small scale is unexpectedly great: a slender metal barrel can sharpen a whole model optically more than a far more laborious photo-etched detail.

Fitting and painting tips

Cut the original plastic barrel off as close to the turret as possible and widen the hole with a micro drill so that the new barrel seats without pressure. First degrease the metal parts, otherwise the paint will not hold on them. They are glued with superglue applied in a microscopic quantity on the tip of a needle; an excess of glue makes an unsightly collar at the root of the barrel. Before painting, apply a thin coat of primer suitable for metal — without it the surface is rubbed bare during ordinary handling. Paint them together with the rest of the armament, so that the shade matches, and fit them as late as possible, ideally only after clear coating and the fitting of the photo-etched parts.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of ship models in 1:700 scale
  • Modelers who combine photo-etch and turned accessories
  • Anyone interested in sharpening the armament without laborious work on plastic

This is an accessory to a model, not a kit in its own right. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The number of pieces is stated on the box. Before buying, please check whether the quantity will cover the armament of your model.

These are replacement barrels of the given type of gun, so check the compatibility against the armament of your own ship.

With superglue in a minimal quantity, applied with the tip of a needle into a predrilled hole. Plastic does not adhere to metal with ordinary modeling glue.

We recommend it. On degreased metal with no base coat the paint is rubbed off during ordinary handling of the model.
