Plastic kit of the German destroyer Z-21 as she was in 1940 in 1:700 scale from Trumpeter. It will complete a collection of Kriegsmarine ships of the start of the Second World War.
Responsibility details are not available.
The kit captures the German destroyer Z-21, named Wilhelm Heidkamp, as she was in 1940. The year in the name describes the appearance of the ship in that year, not the year she was launched. The 1:700 scale is the established standard for warships, so the model does not stand out in size next to cruisers and battleships. Trumpeter has rendered the German destroyers as a complete family and this kit is an early member of it.
Z-21 belonged to Type 1936, that is, to the second generation of German prewar destroyers. The main battery was made up of guns of 12.7 cm caliber in single mounts, supported by torpedo tubes, light anti-aircraft armament and equipment for laying mines. A characteristic feature of these ships was the high, rather wet bow profile and the demanding high-pressure machinery. In April 1940 Z-21 took part in the landings at Narvik as the flagship of a destroyer group and did not survive the fighting in the fjords there.
The hull of a destroyer is slender, so before you glue the superstructures on, fit the parts dry and check that the deck does not lift anywhere. Masts and davits are fragile in 1:700, so it pays to glue them only after the basic surfaces are painted. Apply the gray Kriegsmarine shades with an airbrush in thin coats, so that the engraved details stay readable. A darker emphasis of the panel lines and light drybrushing on the edges will give a small model depth.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
