The submarine Kursk of the Oscar II class in 1:700 scale is a Tamiya plastic kit capturing the Soviet and later Russian nuclear guided missile submarine of Project 949A.
Responsibility details are not available.
Injection-molded plastic kit in the small ship scale of 1:700 from the Japanese firm Tamiya. Submarines are a rewarding subject in this scale: they have few parts and go together quickly, yet they are still impressive, because even at so small a scale a model of a vessel this size comes out long enough to hold attention. The work concentrates above all on the cleanliness of the seams and the surface, since a smooth hull has nowhere to hide an imperfection.
Kursk was a nuclear guided missile submarine of Project 949A, designated the Oscar II class in Western usage. It was a double-hulled design with a large volume between the outer and the pressure hull, where angled canisters for anti-ship guided missiles were housed on both sides. Vessels of this class were among the largest submarines ever built, and their task was to fight large surface groups. The submarine Kursk was lost in an accident in the Barents Sea in 2000.
The key is the work on the seam where the hull halves join: glue the joint tight with cement for plastic, let it cure properly and then sand it through several grits until smooth. Check the finished surface by spraying it with primer, which reveals imperfections at once. Submarines are painted in dark shades, where a flat surface helps suppress a toylike impression; on large areas it is a good idea to grade the shade slightly so that the hull does not read as flat. Glue the rudders, shields and small protrusions on only once the sanding of the hull is finished.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
