Winter clothing is one of the most rewarding subjects a modeler can render on a figure. Bulky garments change the whole silhouette of a soldier, cover the equipment and give a scene a mood that a summer uniform can never have. The set captures German infantry in winter dress from the period between 1941 and 1945, that is from the fighting in which the weather decided as much as the weapons.
The figures are of injection-molded polystyrene and are supplied on sprues, from which they are nipped off with cutters. A standing figure is around twenty-five millimeters tall in this scale, so these are small parts and it pays to work with tweezers over a tray with a raised edge.
Winter clothing is not painted pure white. A cold white with no shadow swallows all the folds and the figure goes flat, so start with a light gray base and pull the white out only on the tops of the folds.
The set suits 1:72 scale vehicle models and a winter diorama, where the figures give the scene both scale and a story. Paints, glue, a base and snow material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
