A plastic model of the Soviet Yak-3 fighter in 1:72 scale from Kovozavody Prostejov. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Yakovlev Yak-3 was one of the lightest fighters of the Second World War. It came about by shrinking and lightening the earlier Yaks, and its strength lay at low altitude, where most of the fighting on the Eastern Front took place. Power came from a liquid-cooled Klimov V12, which was not especially powerful, but thanks to the low weight of the aircraft it was enough for excellent agility and rate of climb. Among others, the French pilots of the Normandie-Niemen regiment flew the Yak-3.
The model in 1:72 scale is injection-molded in polystyrene and is supplied unassembled. The parts are separated from the sprues and joined with modeling cement for plastic. The Yak-3 is a small aircraft, so the finished model takes up little room on a shelf, and all the more depends on clean wing-to-fuselage joints.
Finish the cockpit before you glue the fuselage halves together. Late-war Soviet fighters wore a gray camouflage in two shades on the upper surfaces and a light blue underside, and the dividing line was soft. Take a gloss coat over the surfaces before applying the decals, as white edges form under a decal on a matte surface. Keep the wear restrained; on the wooden parts of the structure the paint flaked differently than on the metal skin.
The set will appeal to builders of Eastern Front aircraft and to collectors of 1:72 scale. The package contains the kit parts; paints, glue and accessories are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
