The CH-53D Sea Stallion is a heavy transport helicopter that served with the United States Marine Corps to carry troops, material and slung loads. It is unmistakable for its massive fuselage with side sponsons, its rear cargo ramp and its six-blade main rotor. Machines of this type took part in the evacuation of Saigon in April 1975, that is, in the operation conducted under the name Frequent Wind, when helicopters carried evacuees from the city to ships off the coast.
This is an unassembled plastic kit in 1:72 scale. The parts are separated from their sprues, cleaned up and joined with modeling cement for polystyrene. The range of parts, the marking options and the recommended shades are given in the manufacturer's instructions. Before gluing, try the larger subassemblies dry; it will save you filling seams on the fuselage.
The helicopter has a large glazed flight deck, so it pays to finish and paint the cockpit before you close the fuselage halves. Mask the glazing before spraying, or the paint will creep under the edge of the frames. Glue the rotor blades on last so that they do not snap off while you work, and when painting count on the large fuselage surfaces showing every unevenness of the filler.
The kit will please modelers with experience of plastic aircraft and helicopter models who appreciate both the striking shape of the machine and its link to a well-known historical episode. Thanks to the size of the real aircraft, the finished model is a prominent item even in a mixed display case. Paints, glue, filler and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
