About product

Cold Skin - a dense acrylic for the skin of figures

Cold Skin is an acrylic paint in a bottle, that is a product thinnable with water or with acrylic thinner. It is not an oil paint, a spray or a weathering effect of the same name — with flesh shades these branches of a range often get confused, and the chemistry is different every time. The Artistic Dense range is denser than ordinary modeling acrylics and in its consistency it comes close to an artist's paint: out of the bottle comes a creamy mass that you then thin yourself according to whether you want a full layer or a translucent glaze. Cold Skin is a cool flesh tone — skin with a gray-blue, not a pink, undertone.

Where the shade belongs

It comes into its own best where skin is to look chilled: a face in the shadow of a helmet, hands in a winter scene, the pale skin of fantasy characters. Most often it serves as the shadow or transitional component to a warmer flesh base, not as the only color of a whole face. A few drops into a warm flesh tone shift a whole face into a cooler position, which helps when a figure stands in a blue or green scene and warm skin jumps out of it unnaturally. On a dark surface flesh tones behave differently from on a light one, so always try the number of layers on an offcut of sprue before you touch a face.

How to work with it

  • A wet palette is practically compulsory with skin — the paint stays supple on it and you manage to blend the transitions before they dry.
  • Thin it drop by drop with water or acrylic thinner; never apply the dense paint to a face at full consistency, as it would clog the features.
  • Mix it with a warmer flesh tone and with white — that way you build a whole scale from the shadow to the highest highlight.
  • Shake the bottle thoroughly before work and wipe the thread when you have finished, so that the cap seats and the paint does not dry out.

Who it is for

For modelers who paint figures with a brush and want a flesh scale put together from several separate shades instead of a single off-the-shelf flesh. It is usable in an airbrush as well, but only after proper thinning.

The product is intended for modeling use. Keep out of the reach of children and close the bottle carefully after work.

FAQ

It is an acrylic, so with water or with acrylic thinner. Neither lacquer nor cellulose thinner belongs in it.

It is not. Identically named shades exist in the oil and weathering ranges as well, but they have different chemistry, a different thinner and a different use. This is a bottled acrylic.

Rather not. It is a cool tone that pays off most as a shadow or as an admixture to a warmer base. On its own it gives skin an unhealthily pale cast, which is useful only in particular situations.

Yes, but only after considerable thinning. A dense acrylic poured straight into the cup will clog the gun.
