Dark Prussian Blue - the dark step of Prussian blue

Dark Prussian Blue is a bottled acrylic paint from the dense Artistic Dense range. It is thinned with water or with acrylic thinner. Against the standard Prussian blue of the same range this is a darker step of the same tone — the pair is built so that they can be used together: the lighter one as the midtone, the darker one as the shadow. If you are after the oil or weathering variant, look in another branch of the range, as this is an acrylic.

Where the shade belongs

In figure painting very dark blues have one specific role: they replace black. On a figure black looks like a hole and in a small scale it eats all the detail; a dark blue does the same darkening but leaves an area alive. The shade therefore suits underlayers and the deepest shadows, dark uniform wool cloth, leather going black, outlining lines between areas and a base over which lighter blues are then built. It also works well as the first dark layer before you start pulling out the highlights.

How to work with it

• Base and layering: lay the dark tone into all the hollows and only then build the lighter blue on the raised areas.
• Use it instead of black in mixes as well — with brown it gives an almost black shadow that keeps its coloring.
• A dense acrylic on a dark area gives away every pass, so work thinner and with more layers.
• What is left on the palette thickens quickly; work in smaller amounts or on a wet palette.
