About product

Vallejo Green Grey RLM02 - acrylic modeling paint, 17 ml

This product is a modeling paint, not a kit. The shade belongs to the Vallejo Model Color line: flat, water-thinnable acrylic paints in a 17 ml bottle with a dropper. Model Color is thicker and heavily pigmented, because it is meant mainly for the brush; for the airbrush you have to thin it with water or with Vallejo thinner. The Model Air line, by contrast, sprays straight from the bottle, and this paint does not belong to it.

About the RLM 02 shade, the most versatile German shade

RLM is the system of shades of the German Reich Air Ministry (Reichsluftfahrtministerium). RLM 02 is a gray-green, greenish gray tone and is by far the most usable item of the whole RLM palette. It was the standard interior shade of German aircraft: cockpits, cabins, landing gear bays, engine compartments and internal structure. Cockpit areas visible under the canopy were taken over from the end of 1941 by the darker RLM 66, but RLM 02 stayed in landing gear bays, engine compartments and other internal surfaces for the whole war. On top of that it also served on external surfaces: as a camouflage component supplementing or replacing part of the RLM 70 / RLM 71 scheme and as the finish of prototypes and training machines. In practical terms: anyone building a German aircraft almost certainly needs this paint.

Use

  • With a brush straight from the bottle; for the airbrush thin it with water or with Vallejo thinner.
  • Shake thoroughly before use: the pigment settles at the bottom.
  • An ideal base for interiors: once dry it takes a dark wash to pick detail out and drybrushing on the edges.
  • The dropper lets you measure ratios exactly when mixing and lightening the shade.

Who the paint is for

For anyone building German aircraft, from interiors and cockpits through landing gear bays and engine compartments to camouflage and prototypes. A shade worth keeping at hand in the workshop at all times.

Safety: make sure of enough ventilation when airbrushing and protect your airways. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

It is the Model Color line, a thicker paint formulated for the brush. For the airbrush thin it with water or with Vallejo thinner. Model Air is a different line that sprays without thinning.

For early machines yes, as RLM 02 was the standard interior shade. In cockpit areas visible under the canopy it was replaced from the end of 1941 by the darker RLM 66, but in landing gear bays, engine compartments and other internal surfaces RLM 02 stayed in use. With a particular machine it is therefore always worth checking the period.

RLM 02 is a greenish gray, a tone on the border between the two colors, and that is why it is named Green Grey. In practice it reads as a warm gray-green.

Yes. A neutral gray-green tone works well on interiors in general, on base coats and as part of your own mixes for subdued military shades.
