Five pencils in a cool palette running from blue-green to a neutral gray, for shading and subtle effects.

Gray and blue are the colors that give a model its depth. This package is put together as a smooth progression from blue-green through dark and light blue to dark and neutral gray, so that shading can be built up from it without mixing and without thinning.
The blue-green and blue end of the palette suits naval subjects, aircraft in blue-gray schemes and the recesses where the sky is really reflected. The dark and neutral grays serve to pick out panel lines, to suggest soot around the exhausts and to deepen the shadow under overhangs. The neutral gray is unobtrusive enough to tone down a color that has come out too saturated without shifting it into another hue. The blue shades, by contrast, can liven up large uniform areas that would otherwise look flat.
Against liquid products, solid pigment has the advantage that it does not run anywhere. The line is laid exactly into the groove or along the edge, and only then do you decide how much of it stays. A damp brush loosens the pigment and turns it into a soft transition, while a dry brush merely spreads it into a hint. The work can be stopped at any point and any excess pigment removed as long as it has not been fixed with varnish. On a gloss surface the pencils slide, so the ideal base is matte or satin. It pays to keep a paper tissue at hand and take the excess off straight away, while the pigment is still loose. Against liquid products there is also no preparation and no washing of jars, which counts above all for short touches between other jobs.
