A dark blue with a naval past

This deep blue is among the classic tones of the whole range. It is dark enough to look calm and unobtrusive over a large area, and yet it keeps a clean blue character with no shift toward violet or green. It covers well in two thin coats.

It is reached for on naval vehicles, on the blue fields of national insignia, on civilian and sport machines and everywhere that blue is meant to be pronounced but not light. On large areas it pays to lighten the tone slightly with white: a scale model reflects less light than the real machine, so a dark shade looks even somewhat darker on it.

The range holds several blues and it is worth not mixing them up. The midnight blue is noticeably darker and cooler, the cobalt leans toward violet, and the sky blue and light blue lie several tones higher. This one sits in the middle and gets on well with white as well as with the gray shades it is often combined with in two-color schemes.

The bottle holds 10 ml of paint with a lacquer binder. Mr. Color Thinner, or its leveling version, serves for thinning and for cleaning the gun; it cannot be thinned with water. The usual ratio is 1:1 to 2:1 depending on the consistency. The dried film is hard and smooth, so decals and subsequent clear coating can be laid over it without worry.

Store the bottle tightly closed and away from heat. From a partly open bottle the solvent evaporates and the paint thickens; you restore it by adding thinner and stirring thoroughly. Do not return the remainder of thinned paint from the gun cup, as it would change the ratio in the whole bottle.
