A metallic shade of dark burnt steel from the Mr. Color lacquer range in a 10 ml bottle. It aims at exhaust tips, gun barrels and surfaces burnt by heat.
Responsibility details are not available.
Burnt metal is the tone that high temperature leaves on steel – dark, deep, with a warm brownish undertone. Modelers reach for it wherever a surface is meant to look heated or worn through to bare metal: exhaust tips, collector pipes, machine gun barrels, heat shields, the edges of steps and the loaded edges of hatches. It also works well on small fittings, hinges and springs, where an opaque black looks flat.
The Mr. Color range is built on a solvent lacquer binder. It is thinned with thinners of the same brand – the ordinary one or the one with a leveling effect – and once dry it holds a very hard film that will take masking with tape, polishing and later sanding and weathering. It is exactly this durability that keeps the lacquer ranges in use even where water-thinnable paints otherwise prevail.
Metallic pigment sinks to the bottom faster than the pigment of opaque shades. Stirring it up to the last settled remnant therefore decides whether the coat comes out even or blotchy. The recommended thinning ranges, according to the thickness, between ratios of 1:1 and 2:1 and it is applied with an airbrush, ideally in several light passes instead of one wet coat.
A smooth base suits metallic tones. On a matte and grainy surface the sparkle of the pigment scatters and the shade loses its metallic character, so it pays to unify the area beforehand with a glossier base. The manufacturer does not recommend brushing it on; anyone who still needs to should add about a quarter of the volume in retarder of the same brand, so as to level the strokes before the film skins over. The volume of the bottle is 10 ml.
