The gray-green shade RLM 74 from the later German fighter camouflage. A synthetic paint for the airbrush, 10 ml.
Responsibility details are not available.
When the fighting moved to high altitude, it turned out that green upper surfaces gave a machine away against clouds and sea. The Luftwaffe therefore introduced a trio of subdued tones, in which the gray-green 74 was the darker component of the upper surfaces. A lighter gray-violet complemented it, and on the underside and the sides of the fuselage a very light blue-gray.
Fighters of the later production batches, heavy twin-engine fighters and some reconnaissance types were covered this way practically until the end of the war. The division between the two upper tones was sharp on the wings, with a hard edge following the outline, whereas on the fuselage they often blended into each other.
The lighter of the upper pair is laid down first, and only then is the pattern drawn in with the gray-green 74. Masking tape is used for the hard edge on the wing, while on the fuselage the same shade is sprayed in small patches from close up and at low pressure until the characteristic mottling appears. A more thinned paint and a steady hand matter more here than the size of the nozzle.
The range is synthetic, thinned with the matching thinner and applied with a gun, not with a brush. The package holds 10 ml, which lasts a long time when mottling, because only a fraction of the contents is used up.
With machines from the later batches it is worth bearing in mind that the tone differed according to the production plant and according to when the machine passed through repair. A slight departure from the color chart is therefore more faithful than a perfect match.
