The thinner decides how the coat behaves at the moment it leaves the nozzle. It determines how long the surface takes to become tacky, whether it has time to flow out into a smooth area or reaches the model half dry and leaves a grainy texture behind. That is why it cannot be replaced by any solvent from the drugstore: the composition is tuned precisely for the binder of this paint family, and a different product may curdle the finish into flakes. Even a beginner will see the difference: a well-thinned coat forms a continuous smooth film, an over-thinned one runs down the surface and an under-thinned one leaves an orange-peel texture.
The recommended range lies between the ratios of 1:1 and 2:1 and is adjusted according to how thick the particular shade is; dark opaque tones usually need more than transparent ones. Mix in a separate container, not straight in the paint bottle, so that you do not thin your stock permanently. The small 50 ml package suits occasional work or travel; with regular spraying you will soon reach for a larger bottle. A test spray on a piece of sprue will reveal a badly chosen ratio before a finished model has to pay for it.
The same liquid will also serve for flushing the airbrush right after the spraying is finished and for dissolving dried residue in the cup. The leveling variant with a retarder, which helps on large gloss areas, is listed as a separate item and does not replace this standard one. Tighten the cap after every pour, as the solvent evaporates quickly. Work with ventilation, away from open flame, and store the bottle in the shade and in the cool.
