The final coat that decides the impression

A clear matte coat in a can of 170 milliliters, a volume that will last for several medium models. It is applied at the very end, when the paint is finished and the decals are settled. Its job is to bring different sheens down to one level, because it is precisely a discordant reflection that gives a model away sooner than any inaccuracy of shape.

Decals under protection

The proven procedure runs through a gloss intermediate coat. On a smooth gloss base a decal seats without silvering bubbles, and once dry it is covered with this matte coat and its carrier film disappears. Anyone who lays a decal straight onto a matte surface usually grows a matte halo under it that nothing can save afterwards.

When not to spray

The matting component reacts to the humidity of the air. On a damp and cold day it can turn the surface white with a milky veil, which can only be repaired by spraying again in better conditions. A dry day and a can brought to room temperature are ideal, and shake it thoroughly for at least a minute before work so that the matting agent is dispersed.

Spraying technique

Keep a distance of around 25 centimeters and move in a smooth pass that begins and ends off the model. Two to three thin coats give a better result than one generous one, which tends to run into the engraving and fill it. It is better to mask clear canopy parts in advance, because the solvent in the coat is fairly harsh on clear plastic. A test spray onto a piece of sprue reveals how the can is behaving at that moment and is worth the few extra seconds. Let the last coat cure for at least a day; only then is the surface ready for handling and for applying pigments into the recesses.
