About product

Fine Sanding Stick: a fine sanding stick, 600 grit (AK interactive)

Fine Sanding Stick from AK interactive is a modeling tool, not a kit. It carries fine 600 grit abrasive and comes in at the moment when the rough work is done: it smooths the surface after coarser sanding, evens it out and prepares it under a primer, paint or a clear coat. The grade of abrasive is told apart by the color of the stick, and with these sticks the manufacturer stresses their longer life thanks to the quality of the abrasive used.

A fine stick is a tool of the final stage. It is used to smooth out the marks left by coarse sanding, level filler finely, even out the surface around a repaired spot and for sanding between coats, that is a light pass over a dried layer of primer or clear coat so that the next layer goes on smoothly and holds no grains and hairs.

The key thing that beginners most often get caught by: a fine grit will not repair a mistake made by a coarse one. Grit 600 is a high number, that is a fine abrasive: it takes off little and merely polishes deep scratches left by coarse abrasive instead of removing them. The scratch then disappears from view but comes back as soon as gloss varnish goes on the part. So always work from coarser to finer: first the Coarse Sanding Stick in 150 grit to take material off, and only then this fine 600 to finish. The two sticks form a natural pair.

Use

  • Smoothing the surface after coarse sanding, removing scratches and evening out the area.
  • Final leveling of filler in a seam so that the transition does not show under the paint.
  • Preparing the surface under a primer, paint or a clear coat.
  • Sanding between coats of dried primer or clear coat before the next layer goes on.
  • Wet sanding: moistening suppresses the dust, the abrasive clogs less and the surface comes out smoother.

Who it is for

For modelers who care about the surface, which means anyone who paints a model in the end. It works best as the second step after a coarse stick; on its own it will not take off much material and it is not meant for casting blocks or flash. Rinse it after use and let it dry, as sanding sticks are generally reusable.

Even fine sanding releases dust, so do not breathe it in. Work in a ventilated space, protect your airways and, if the surface allows it, sand wet.

FAQ

No. That is the most common mistake. Grit 600 takes off little: it merely polishes deep scratches but does not remove them. Under gloss varnish they show up again. Scratches have to be sanded out with a coarser grit and only then smoothed with a fine one.

A coarse sanding stick, typically 150 grit from the same line. That one takes material off: it removes flash, casting blocks and excess filler. The fine 600 then finishes the surface. You always go from a coarser grit to a finer one.

A dried layer of primer or clear coat is never perfectly smooth, as dust and grains settle in it. A light pass with a fine stick levels the surface, so the next layer goes on smoothly and the result is cleaner.

No, it is a modeling tool, a sanding stick. It holds no parts of a model.
