Gunpla Photo-Etched Detail Up Parts Set from the U-STAR brand is a set of photo-etched metal parts for adding detail to Gunpla robot kits and related science-fiction models.
Responsibility details are not available.
This item is not a kit or a model in its own right but an accessory. The set contains photo-etched metal parts that are fitted onto a robot model already built or under way and replace or add to its plastic surfaces with a finer item. It is an accessory from U-STAR for kits of the Gunpla type and for similar robots and mechs.
Injection-molded plastic has a given minimum wall thickness, so grilles, cooling slots, plates and rims come out thicker on a finished model than the scale would allow. Photo-etched sheet, by contrast, is very thin and its edge stays sharp even after painting. On robot models that shows especially well, because panels, vents and lightening holes make up a large part of their look. A metal part also reflects light differently from plastic, so the surface reads as richer even without painting.
Separate the parts on a hard surface with a sharp knife or scissors made for photo-etch, never with sprue nippers. Level the burr after separating with a fine file. Make the folds over a straight edge, ideally in a photo-etch bending tool, so that a sharp fold line appears rather than a curve. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a base color, otherwise the paint holds badly. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue or with glue made for photo-etched parts. Solvent cement for plastic has no effect on metal.
