Plastruct Half Round Rod — Half-Round Profile 1.0 x 2.0 mm

A precisely extruded profile made of white polystyrene in the shape of half a circle: a flat underside and a rounded top. Width 2.0 mm, height 1.0 mm, length 250 mm, sold as one piece. This is a modeling material, not a kit — used to make your own details and to add to finished models.

Use

• Imitating pipes and conduit run flush against a surface — pipes running along a wall or a hull, cable bundles, wiring, trim strips. The rounded top looks like a pipe, but the profile does not stick out anywhere.
• Rounded trim, rims and panel reinforcements.
• Grab handles, handles and fittings, protective strips and bumpers.
• Frames and edging with a soft, not sharp, cross-section.

Why a half-round instead of a round profile

The main advantage is practical: the flat side lets the profile sit flush on a surface on its own and stay in place. A round rod only touches a flat surface at a tangent, rolls around and needs careful positioning and fixing before the glue takes. With a half-round, you just run thin liquid cement along the edge and it is done — and it also creates the natural look of a pipe set into the surface.

Working the material

Polystyrene is the same plastic as ordinary kits: it is cut with a scalpel, sanded and glued with ordinary solvent-based plastic cement, which melts the surface and forms a firm weld. It is painted with the same paints as a model; a primer is useful on a smooth surface.
